Choosing a train ticket can often seem like a complicated process with many people unsure what options are available to them. The following page provides an overview of the main options and points out where savings can be made.
In short, the choice of ticket will depend on where you wish to travel from/to and how often to will be travelling. Also, unlike with buses, the cost of ticket is dictated by when the ticket is bought.
Train travel can be paid for on the day by purchasing a ticket at the station or on the train. This is however the most expensive option and where possible we would recommend that train users pre-purchase their tickets via one of the options below.
If you plan to travel regularly by train in West Yorkshire (i.e. your daily commute), MetroCard is probably the best option for you. Metro has a range of season tickets, day tickets and passes to help you make the most of public transport in West Yorkshire and beyond.
MetroCard cuts the cost of regular travel in West Yorkshire, and can be purchased weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly. MetroCards can be used just for travel by bus, or can include journeys by train within the zones you select.
Full details on the range of MetroCard options can be found by visiting the Metro website (click here)
Those travelling from Harrogate and Skipton are also now able to purchase an add on to the standard MetroCard, allowing additional rail zones to be linked to their ticket. Further information is available by clicking here
For companies interested in helping their employees get a good deal on regular travel, the Corporate MetroCard scheme offers an additional discount of 15% off the regular price of a MetroCard.
Corporate participation in the MetroCard scheme could save employees over £100 a year.

If your journey by rail is from outside of West Yorkshire, you will need to consider the ticketing options available to you on the National Rail Network. These options vary depending on how often you wish to travel, but a brief guide is available by clicking here
Season Tickets
If your journey by train is a regular one (i.e. your daily commute), you may find that on the majority of routes, Season Tickets offer better value for money compared to buying daily tickets. You can buy a season ticket for seven days or any period between one month and a year.
