Car sharing isn't just good for individuals. It is also good for business and good for the environment.

The more people that car share, the less cars there are on our roads. It may seem like a simple principle, but many people do not appreciate the effect that less cars can have on us all.

Yes it is good for the environment (transport currently accounts for 42% of GB's carbon output), but on a more local level it also reduces congestion and frees up valuable car parking spaces.

The school holiday takes around 10% of cars off the road, and just think how much difference it makes to our road network (and car parks) in that period. Car sharing reduces the number of cars on the road by 50% ... imagine the difference that could make.

Guaranteed Ride Home Scheme

One of the barriers to staff agreeing to car share is the fear of being left stranded if their lift falls through, e.g. if their lift giver is unexpectedly required to work late or if a child falls ill.

It has been shown that the offer of a Guaranteed Ride Home, in which the organisation agrees to meet the cost of any taxi fare, can do much to alleviate these fears.

Whilst this may sound potentially expensive for your organisation, evidence shows that whilst being very popular and successful, these schemes are in practice very inexpensive to implement. GRH schemes offer a safety net providing staff with the confidence that they won’t get stranded.

Reserved Car Share Spaces

The provision of reserved car share parking spaces is an excellent way of encouraging staff to car share, and the more car share spaces you can dedicate and fill the better. Don’t forget that car sharing can literally halve your car parking demand, freeing up spaces for those who need them most!

The mechanisms for providing car share spaces can be very simple, from the provision of car share passes to be displayed on the dash board, to quick occasional checks by security staff.

Evidence has shown that the lure of a reserved parking space if often enough to make people consider car sharing, especially if those spaces are located close to building entrances on cold and dark winter days.
