Thorpe Park cyclists… Fancy getting your hands on one of two £100 Halfords vouchers to grab some new cycling accessories? Keep on reading to be in with a chance!
As the days grow shorter and the evenings darker, keeping up your commute by bike becomes a savvy way to stay active – especially if want to fit some exercise into your day. But winter brings extra challenges: lower light levels, cold and damp weather, and the need for greater visibility and comfort. Drawing on tips from the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, here’s how to make cycling to work through the darker months easier and more enjoyable.
Make visibility your priority
Lights are essential: you’re required by law to have a white light at the front and a red light at the rear when riding in low light. A clip-on or helmet light can work well in addition to these lights on your bike, and ensuring reflective clothing like a vest or jacket adds a strong safety boost too.
Dress for the weather, not just for the commute
Your outfit matters more than ever in winter. Think gloves to keep fingers warm (without compromising your ability to use your handbrakes) and waterproof outer layers so rain or drizzle won’t stop you riding. Comfortable shoes with pedal grip and a reflective vest are simple but effective additions.
Gear up your bike for year-round use
Mudguards are a must if your route has wet patches or muddy sections, they stop dirty water splashing up and keep you and your bike cleaner. A pump and puncture repair kit are also wise – the winter road surface can increase the risk of flat tyres.
Top winter-cycling tips for your workday
- Pack spare dry clothes to change into when you arrive.
- Plan a route with good lighting and safe surfaces.
- Check your bike and lights before you set off each morning.
- Consider a warmer layer you can peel off once you’re pedalling and warmer.
By staying visible, dry, comfortable and secure, you’ll be well placed to keep cycling through winter’s darker months, turning your commute into an active choice that benefits your health, and your wallet.
