Fancy getting on your bike but not quite sure where to start? Whether it’s been a few months, a few years, or you’ve never really cycled before, Sofa to Saddle is designed to help make getting started that little bit easier.
Developed by British Cycling and Lloyds, Sofa to Saddle is a free app aimed at beginners and anyone looking to rediscover cycling. Think of it as a cycling version of Couch to 5K, helping you gradually build up your confidence, fitness and time in the saddle without putting pressure on speed or performance.
The app takes you through an eight-week programme, with plenty of support along the way, including:
- Gradual cycling goals to help you build up your time and distance at a comfortable pace;
- Suggested routes and ride ideas to take some of the guesswork out of where to go;
- Confidence-building advice for new and returning cyclists;
- Basic bike care and maintenance tips to help keep you and your bike ready to ride;
- Health, fitness and wellbeing advice developed with input from health professionals and cycling experts; and
- Milestones and rewards to keep you motivated as you progress.

For anyone working at Thorpe Park Leeds, it could also be a great way to build towards cycling some or all of your commute. You don’t have to make a complete switch either, even cycling occasionally, using the bike for shorter local journeys or combining cycling with public transport can help you fit more activity into your day.
As well as being a practical way to get around, cycling is a great way to spend more time outdoors, improve fitness and support your overall health and wellbeing. So, if your bike has been gathering dust in the garage, perhaps now is the time to give it another go!
