Cold weather and darker evenings don’t have to signal the end of your active commute. With the right preparation, you can keep enjoying the outdoors this winter both whilst staying active, safe, and visible.
Top Tips for Being Bright and Being Seen
Be Bright
Even if it’s daylight when you set off, make sure you’re ready for the early sunsets. Wear something high-vis and check your bike lights before you go. It’s a legal requirement to have a white front light and a red rear light when cycling at night and it of course, helps others see you sooner.
Dress for the Conditions
Preparation is key. Invest in a good waterproof jacket, ideally something lightweight that you can fold into your bag for unexpected showers. Staying dry makes all the difference.
Keep Warm
Cold hands can make cycling or walking uncomfortable (and unsafe). Choose gloves that keep you warm while still allowing a good grip on your handlebars and full control of your brakes and gears.
Layer Up
Opt for several thin layers rather than one bulky one. This helps regulate your temperature as you move. You can always add or remove layers easily as you warm up or cool down.
Look After Your Bike
Winter riding can mean more dirt, grit, and moisture. Give your bike a quick wipe-down after each journey to prevent rust and keep it running smoothly. Regular maintenance goes a long way in bad weather.
Get a Grip
Good tyre tread is essential when the roads are wet or icy. Make sure your tyres have plenty of grip to reduce the risk of slipping or skidding.
Choose Your Position Carefully
Road edges can collect puddles, mud, and debris. Ride slightly further out if it’s safe to do so, and watch out for damp leaves, manhole covers, and painted lines, all of which can be slippery. Always allow faster vehicles to pass when it’s safe for both of you.
Be Safe, Not Sorry
If the weather turns particularly bad, it’s okay to leave the bike or trainers at home. Consider taking public transport until conditions improve, your safety comes first.
